Multimedia Story DRAFT

My plan for my multimedia story project is to document activities I do over my weekend camping with friends at Elk Falls. There are a few activities that we have planned, so I will mainly need camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, food) and hiking equipment (hiking shoes, water bottle). I will also make sure that my phone is fully charged to be sure that my phone is charged so that I can record my activities throughout the day. I am fortunate that one of my friends already lives in Campbell River, so he can scout the location ahead of time.

Currently, the plan for the shape of my story is the chronologic order of things that we do over Saturday. The beginning will focus on waking up at the Elk Falls campsite and then preparing for the first activity of the day. The middle will record activities done during the day (hiking, golfing, etc.). The ending will focus on the return to the campsite, making dinner with friends and reflecting on the main activities done during the day.

Because we are planning to do a variety of things during the weekend I think that I will be able to successfully capture a wide variety of media. I’m currently planning on capturing: text through my throughs and reflections, images taken during hiking, golfing, and other activities, audio and video from my hike and other activities.

To integrate my multimedia story in alignment with Mayer’s Principles of Multimedia Learning I will be sure that my summaries are descriptive yet not overfilled with content as to not overwhelm the reader. I will also follow the Contiguity Principle by ensuring that words and images are presented close to one another. Furthermore, I plan on applying the Segmenting Principle to separate my activities. By separating my activities throughout the day I am able to focus on specific aspects of the day, allowing me to manage readers’ limited capacity for Cognitive Load. I may also try to include the Dual Coding Theory to take advantage of both non-verbal processing and verbal processing to better present information to readers.
